TYRONE MARQUIS-SMITH
Tyrone was born in East St. Louis Illinois to saxophonist Johnnie Floyd Smith. Tyrone went to private school at the age of 8, he attended St. Joseph Catholic School where he took drum lessons, along with theory and ear training. Ty as is commonly known, first playgrounds were recording studios and spots where his dad rehearsed and played music with many jazz music legends. Ty’s music bloodline extends beyond his father to include greats like Clark Terry, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillipsie, and many more.
By the time he was a teenager, Marquis-Smith had been schooled by seasoned industry vets. He then evolved as a bandleader, and in high school was voted #8 in the state of Illinois to the ALL-STATE BAND, beating out a lot of the Chicago drummers. From there he was recruited by Jazz guitarist Eddie Fisher {THE THIRD CUP ALBUM} to record and tour with him. It didn't take long for Tyrone who was already playing keyboards to start writing for other band members.
"
At 17 his first publishing credit was for penning a song for Gene Poo-Poo Man Anderson of PARLIEMENT-FUNKADELIC called PARTY FREAKS. It is at this time TMS Records was formed and albums were produced for The FOX Network {Kelly Wright} along with Neo-Soul, Spoken Word artist {SHAKESPHEREBLAC]. However the groundbreaker was when Tyrone released his own Neo-Soul, New Wave Jazz CD called "THE 5TH SEAL", which received 5 star reviews. The CD was so strong that Ty has been the opening act for Boney James, Pieces of a Dream, and in Richmond Virginia, he received 3 encores as he opened up for the Grammy Award winning, Legendary Keyboardist Joe Sample. Ty also was a 2008 Portfolio Music Awards Nominee for best R&B/Hip Hop Artist of the Year.
Although all music appeals to Tyrone, but his personal style is gritty, raw and non-conforming to the market trends! To learn more about Tyrone Marquis-Smith and to hear his music log onto: http://www.tmsrecords.com
